Chinese Spy Embedded Deep in New York State Government

Earlier this week, the U.S Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the recent arrest of a former deputy chief of staff for both the current and former New York State governor, along with her husband, should continue to serve as a wake-up call about the deep infiltration of Chinese spies into both private and public democratic institutions.

Back in July, I wrote about two former NYPD officers who were terminated following an FBI and NYPD Internal Affairs investigation. The officers were accused of furthering the Chinese government’s objectives.

Now, in the case of the former New York State official, she had allegedly been acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for fourteen years, leveraging her position to influence state policy.

Her compensation, reportedly worth millions, included a home in Long Island, New York, and additional properties in Hawaii valued at over $5 million, plus a 2024 Ferrari.

Here are some key points raised in a New York Times article on how she allegedly shaped New York State policy to serve the interests of the CCP:

A Worldwide Problem for Democracies

This issue isn’t limited to the United States. In another report this week, a Chinese spy who had been elected mayor of a city in the Philippines fled the country after she was questioned about her country of birth. Claiming not to remember, she was later arrested in Indonesia for espionage activities on behalf of China.

The Importance of Background Screening

As I’ve emphasized in previous posts, thorough and rigorous background screening of ethnic Chinese candidates, both in government and the private sector, is absolutely essential.

Without extremely robust and proactive measures, our democratic institutions will remain vulnerable to relentless infiltration by Chinese espionage and influence operations. The gravity of this threat cannot be overstated—our nation’s security, sovereignty, and the integrity of our public institutions are at stake.

American companies, especially R&D research centers, are equally at risk, as they too have become prime targets for foreign espionage and disruption efforts. The need for vigilance extends beyond government entities to the private sector, where corporate espionage could cripple industries critical to national interests.
