To Catch a Chinese MSS / IP Spy–UPDATE

As a follow-up to my post titled, “To Catch a Chinese/MSS—IP Spy” — convicted Ministry of State Security (MSS) spy—Yanjun Xu—was sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. federal court on November 16th.

Yanjun Xu was the first Chinese MSS intelligence officer ever to be extradited to the U.S. and stand trial. (Xu had risen to the rank of MSS Deputy Director.)

Among Xu’s various IP theft assignments, he was particularly focused on stealing U.S. aviation trade secrets and recruiting others to do the same.

Three years ago, I published a post titled, “U.S. Educated Chinese Students–Abuse U.S. Temporary Work Program”, where I went into some detail about one of Xu’s eager ethnic Chinese spy-recruits.

That recruit went on to get his education in the U.S. and subsequently enlist in the U.S. Army Reserve as he simultaneously advanced Xu’s IP theft recruitment operation.

On September 22nd of this year, that recruit (Ji Chaoqun) was convicted as well.

See the attached Department of Justice (DOJ) November 16th press release for more details.
